Festival Bears

We went to the Starry Skies festival this week.  It was great but I the whole time torn between living the event and recording the event.  Seeing as the whole point of the trip was to spend time with the bears, living the event won in the end.  As a result I don't actually have many pictures which I am a bit sad about, wish I could redo the trip just as a photographer.

It's been sooooo hot this week so there has been lots of water play with the bears, ending the week with a visit to a wild swimming spot in Hampshire.

I love the light in our bathroom in the Summer evenings, however this time of day is when the bears are at their most temperamental and least cooperative which is reflected in these images!

Swing time this week.  This playground is in the garden of a cafe in Surrey.  I have a fantasy about owning a cafe, I don't think I would actually want to do this in real life but I like dreaming about it and in my daydreams the cafe would have a playground outside.

We got to release our butterflies this week.  I had high hopes for photographing this but things didn't quite go to plan.  Mr bear was afraid to touch the butterflies and waltzed off in a huff and then as the butterflies didn't immediately fly away I had to keep both of the bears from treading on them accidentally.  Therefore I only have one photo worth sharing- never work with children and butterflies!

As it was half term I also let the bears have their nails painted and as you can see they could decide on one colour.  I love that Mr Bear wants his done like his sisters and I really hope that he maintains his blindness to gender stereotypes when he starts school..........sadly though, I doubt he will.

A trip to Kew Gardens this week, unfortunately I can't include a lot of the pictures because other people's children are in them but here are the bears!

Community Garden in North Kensington

This week I was lucky enough to photograph the opening of a community garden in North Kensington. Sandwiched between a railway line and a main road this small scrap of land has been reclaimed by local people and turned from a rubbish heap into a thriving mini oasis.

I often wonder how many hours I have spent in playgrounds over the last 5 years and how many days those hours would add up to however I know I will be sad the day the bears tell me they are too old to go.

Bear takeover week

Lately the bears are getting for and more interested in my camera and what I am seeing as I hold it in front of my face so this week I let them take pictures each other.

Funny face time

The bears are now of that age where unless completely absorbed in a task, they are very aware of my camera.  Some weeks they are co operative and engaged, other weeks they are just not feeling it.  This week was somewhere in between, they were very happy to be photographed as long as it was on their terms so inevitably this is what happened!

Within our family unit, understandably, I am the designated photographer, however one of my new year resolutions was to get in the frame more often.  A while ago I listened to a podcast with the writer Sali Hughes in which she said that she thought it was actually cruel as a mother to not appear in photographs with your children because if (god forbid) you died, then they wouldn't have anything tangible to remember you.  As a mother, this broke my heart, I had never thought about it that way before so here goes to letting go of the creative reins and handing the camera over to other people once in a while.  Of course, I also took some pics myself this week!

Storm in a Teacup

Photographed the Studio Cultivate team at the Chelsea Physic Garden this week performing their educational play on the history of tea.  It was super interactive and despite the drizzly weather, the kids remained engaged and enthusiastic.

I will NEVER tire of taking pictures of children!

I mixed work and pleasure by taking the bears on a shoot at Chelsea physic Garden.  They had a grand time running around and agreed to pose for my pictures in return for a chocolate brownie in the cafe!

Nannie and Grandad bought the bears bubbles this week so we ran outside quickly in between rain showers to play with them.  It started hailing about 5 mins after we got back in.

It snowed on four days this week, notice I say 'on' four days rather than 'for' four days and despite it causing Lady bear's school to close on Friday, the snow didn't actually amount to very much.  Still, the bears made the most of what we did have!
